COMPANY HISTORY

Saeco International Group as it is structured today dates back to 1976 when Sergio Zappella established GSL, a company producing espresso coffee machines for home use mainly made for third parties.

In 1981, Sergio Zappella and Arthur Schmed, a Swiss engineer, created Saeco S.r.l. with its registered office at Gaggio Montano, a small Apennine town in the province of Bologna. The two partners decided to operate their business and manufacture their products under a proprietary brand name. Immediately realizing the great potential of this market, the partners dedicated considerable time and resources to perfecting technology and the result was the production of the first fully-automatic espresso coffee machine in 1985. This innovation quickly turned out to be a major market success because of its broad implications for filling a void in terms of consumer demand.

The following year marked yet another fundamental stage in the company's development, with Sergio Zappella and Giovanni Zaccanti establishing Cosmec S.p.A. for the specific purpose of producing coffee machine parts. This move more or less represented the start of a vertical integration process that eventually prompted the Group to bring all production in-house.

In 1986, improvements were made to the management and control of the sales network with the implementation of a system allowing for ongoing international expansion. The formula used for setting up the foreign operations has translated into a major strength for the Group overall.

The nineties marked a period of great ferment. In the 1989-1993 period, Cosmec inaugurated production of various espresso coffee and automated vending machines. Then in 1995 and 1996, Saeco started up the marketing of its "climate" and "steam" products.

October 1999 marked the beginning of a global reorganization, with Cosmec changing its name to the Saeco International Group and assuming the role of the holding company. In December 1999, the Group acquired the control of Gaggia S.p.A.. The acquisition of Gaggia, a historical brand in the professional coffee machines sector, has allowed Saeco to reinforce its position in this market segment and to further increase its sales capacity.

Building on past success, the Saeco International Group is today a system of companies which is continuing to pursue international expansion.

INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY

Since 1981 Saeco has concentrated its efforts mainly on state-of-the-art technology with a view to becoming the market leader in Italy and abroad. The Group's financial results attest to the validity of this strategy. A technologically advanced machine is a guarantee of quality beverages and thus a key element for success with consumers.

The merit for the invention of the first fully-automatic espresso coffee machine for home use belongs to Saeco, which produced its first model in 1985. For the first time ever, the consumer merely had to put water and coffee beans into a machine: the grinding, the measuring, and the brewing of the coffee and the expulsion of the used coffee grounds are carried out automatically throughout a process that regulates the quantity, pressure and temperature of the water. The removable brewing unit - the heart of the machine - is covered by an international patent.
In addition to automating the preparation of the coffee and guaranteeing the quality of the result, the brewing unit is removable, thereby making maintenance and cleaning of the machine an easier task. The automation is the greatest selling point, since it makes it possible for anyone at any longitude or latitude and in any nation or culture, to prepare an excellent espresso coffee, regular cup of coffee or specialty drink.

Enhancing and refining the technical capacities of the coffee machines, the Cappuccinatore and the pressurized filter holder are other mechanisms patented by the Group. The Cappuccinatore is a practical device that draws the milk directly out of the carton and turns it into a dense, velvety froth. The pressurized filter holder keeps the water pressure constant while the espresso coffee is brewed, thus making it rich and creamy.

Thanks to the constant use of technological innovation, the Group boasts highly flexible production lines capable of handling the introduction of model improvements and changes in design and ergonomics. The Group not only takes care of the production of its machines, but it also handles the planning and assembly of the individual components, in order to control and monitor all fundamental phases of the production process. In this way, the Group is able to ensure that its products meet pre-established quality standards at every stage of the production process, including the finished products which are quality controlled tested.

The Housewares Distribution spans from specialty gourmet retailers to upscale department stores, from direct mail merchandisers to internet retailers, specialized electrical appliance stores and warehouse clubs.

The Houseware Products consist of three major product lines, Traditional and Fully Automatic espresso coffee machines to make wonderful espressos, regular cups of coffee, lattes, cappuccinos and all other specialty coffee drinks.

Fully Automatic Espresso Coffee Machines that grind, dose, tamp, brew and dispense one or two cups of coffee and dispose the used coffee grounds all in one cycle. All our fully automatic models feature the Saeco Easy Clean System®, a patented brewing unit that can be easily removed for effortless cleaning. These machines have been designed to ensure maximum ease of use and maintenance, and to avoid the hassle and high cost of service. Also featuring a powerful steam wand and special pannarello frothing attachment, a burr grinder, a removable water tank and a 15 bar pump. Look out for our Saeco Rapid-Steam System® that has revolutionized latte and cappuccino making, eliminating the waiting time for the boiler to change from frothing to brewing temperature.

Traditional Pump Driven Machines with special pressurized filter holders that allow easy handling and constant great results- SAECO.
